Unlike most other RSPCA Centres, we do not allow the public to view the available dogs by wandering around the kennels. During the time when we were closed due to the foot and mouth crisis, we began to re-home dogs by matching the owners requirements to the temperaments and needs of each dog. We found that when people did not choose dogs initially by appearance (which would happen when wandering around the kennels), we ended up having far more successful re homing, and our return rates reduced.
We have continued to re-home the same amount of dogs as before and have also found it to be beneficial to the welfare of the dogs.
Animal Centres are very stressful places for any animal, but especially for dogs. We have found that since the public have not been walking past the kennels, they stay calmer and suffer less stress. There has also been a decrease in aggression related problems.
If you are interested in taking on a dog, please telephone the Centre during our opening hours to discuss the dogs we have available. When you come to the Centre, a member of staff will have an informal interview with you to find out your requirements and will be able to show you pictures of any dogs which might suit. If you would then like to view these dogs, they will be brought over for you to meet.
